A Parent’s Guide to Trading Card Games

If your child suddenly starts talking about booster packs, decks, rare cards, and trading, welcome to the world of trading card games! Games like Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and One Piece combine collecting with strategy—and they can offer more benefits than parents might realize.

More Than Just Collecting

Trading card games encourage kids to read, plan, solve problems, and think strategically. Players learn how different cards interact, build decks, manage resources, and adjust their strategy during a game.

They’re also social. Playing at a local game store gives kids an opportunity to meet others with similar interests while practicing sportsmanship and communication.

Understand the Collecting Side

Not every card needs to be expensive or rare. Help younger players understand the difference between playing, collecting, and investing. Setting a monthly card budget can also teach children how to manage money and make thoughtful purchases.

Parents should also encourage kids to learn a card’s value before making trades. A shiny card isn’t necessarily valuable—and an ordinary-looking card might be worth more than expected.

Try Playing Together

One of the best ways to understand your child’s hobby is to join them. Pick up a beginner deck, learn the basics, and play a few games together.

At The Big Game in Amherst, Ohio, we’re happy to help new players—and their parents—find the right game, understand the basics, and start playing.

You may discover trading cards aren't just your child's new hobby. They might become yours, too!
